How To Save Energy When Air Conditioning Is A Must

There are times when you have to have your air conditioning on such as during the heart of summer. The problem with using the air conditioner is that you will use a lot of energy. If you want to keep your energy bills lower, there are a number of steps that you can take to save energy when you have to use the air conditioner.

How To Save Energy When Air Conditioning Is A Must

Keep It Lower At Night

During the night you will not need the same level of cooling as you do when you are awake.  You should look at turning down your air conditioner while you sleep as this will use less energy.  Many of the modern units will also have a sleep mode which lowers the output of the air conditioner based on a timer.  You can also consider having only the fan option on overnight if you are not too hot.

Use Portable Or Window Units

A portable All Cool Air Conditioners is ideal if you are not looking to cool your entire home.  A window unit will also cool only one room which will save energy.  Portable and window units will use 50% less energy than a larger unit when cooling the same area.  Of course, if you are looking to cool your entire home then you will need to use a larger central air unit.

Close Off The Vents

Closing off all of the vents in the lower section of your home is recommended because the basement is generally the coolest in your home.  Cool air naturally sinks to the lower areas of your home and will escape through the vents.  When you close the vents you will force this cool air up where it will cool the other parts of your home.

Rearrange Your Furniture

A lot of people do not realize that their furniture will obstruct the flow of their air conditioning.  If your furniture is not placed correctly, your central air vent could be cooling the back of your chair and not the rest of the room.  If you do not want to rearrange your furniture, you can buy plastic pieces that are attached to the vents to force the air in a certain direction.  While this is an option, it is recommended that you move your furniture instead even if this is only temporary.

Don't Forget About The Fan

A lot of people rely solely on their air conditioner and forget all about fans.  While air conditioners keep things cool, you can use the fans to circulate the cool air.  This means that you will not have to use the air conditioners as much or at a higher setting which uses more energy.  Fans also use less energy than air conditioners.

There are a number of ways that you can save energy when you have to use your air conditioner.  Using the different settings on your unit is important particularly if the unit has a sleep function.  You should also consider how your furniture is impacting the flow of cool air.
